Living through the 2008 floods in Iowa City, artist Ely Sotillo saw how his neighbors and the rest of the Corridor were impacted with destruction. Following the floods, he was inspired by the sense of community while helping and witnessing the community bounce back from the tragic flood. “A lot of people would give up after such a tragic event, but people still held down to their traditions and a sense of community, and I feel like a better sense of community has actually evolved because of that.” said Sotillo. The mural is of a carp, a well known fish of the Cedar River, coming out of water rebuilding cities. Look closely to see specific Cedar Rapids buildings.
